AI executives plan for the "day after" a catastrophic cyber event, Axios reports
Axios reports that top executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out "day after" scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event, most likely a large-scale cyberattack that shuts down access to financial services, the internet, or power and water. Many in the industry told Axios a major incident is inevitable and will happen within six to 12 months; the planning is mainly red-teaming worst cases and racing to educate members of Congress, who they do not expect to pass regulation before a first catastrophe. In a CBS News interview, the article's reporter Maria Curi said the companies are treating an event as near-inevitable and that aides believe Congress could still act, as it did during COVID-19 and the 2008 financial crisis.
